This game is great for fans of tennis that enjoy a first-person perspective when playing against an opponent.
Tennis Masters Series was originally developed in 2003 and many believe that it is leaps and bounds ahead of the previous version. While this may be a rather "lightweight" simulation when compared to similar platforms, players will still be able to enjoy the action-packed competitions that are offered. The graphics have improved as has the overall smoothness of player movements. So, Tennis Masters is seen to offer much more in terms of realism than was possible with its predecessor.
Improvements
One of the most noticeable changes is the presence of a circular bar that indicates the strength of the serve. This can also be seen in many of the golf games currently available. Also, the players are more lithe and the user will have much better control over their actions. The distinct movements of the characters is another benefit to be noted alongside improved court graphics and the details of the competitors themselves. In terms of sheer entertainment value, this 2003 version offers cut scenes between the matches that are very similar to the video shots observed during a real game.
Player and Stadium Editors
Tennis Masters has been upgraded through the ability to customise both the stadium and the player. Court colours and backgrounds can be modified while the characters are able to change uniforms to suit one's needs. However, it should be noted that the competitors are still generic; all names are fictitious.
Drawbacks
While these improvements are significant, they still appear to be rather flimsy in terms of the overall game play. The opponents are controlled by the computer and the AI involved (artificial intelligence) clearly shows the age of the platform. Some moves can be predictable and over time, the avid tennis fan may become bored with a somewhat known outcome.
Specifications
Tennis Masters is suited for use with all Windows operating systems up to Windows 2000 and Windows NT. As it is just over 90 megabytes in size, most will have no problem allocating existing memory. Direct X 8.0 or higher is the recommended video codec to be used.
Pros
- Improved graphics
- Better player control
- Smoother movements
Cons
- The game still lacks a realistic feel
